Students mark Forest Day

Hundreds of primary and high school students from schools around Lae joined the International Forest Day celebrations at the PNG Forest Research Institute (PNGFRI) in Lae (PNG).

The official launch and observation was led by Bulolo MP and National Planning and Monitoring Minister Sam Basil and Prof Simon Saulei of PNGFRI, who joined stakeholders to observe the day. Despite the rain, the students took part in tree planting, showcasing of research and distribution of tree seedlings under the guidance of teachers.

Most of them were given assignments to complete and to find answers, they had to go through the booths inside the main hall of the PNGFRI building, which resembled a huge classroom.

PNGFRI staff were on hand to brief the students and answer questions relating to forests, climate change, logging industry and its impacts, as well as insects and animals that make forests their homes. Students were impressed because they were given first-hand information.
